It is definitely a showndown in Penang for this coming general election. It is a major battleground between Barisan Nasional coalition and Opposition parties that mainly comprise of DAP and PKR.
Earlier, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng has announced that he is leading the party into the March 8 General Election in Penang. It is reported that DAP is planning to contest seven parliamentary and 19 state seats in Penang. It is also learnt that Guan Eng is likely to contest the Paya Terubong state seat, which the MCA won by 1,392 votes in 2004.
With Penang as a Chinese-majority state, everyone is really focus on how well DAP can perform against the Barisan Nasional coliation as the main opposition party. Moreover, it is also widely speculated that UMNO is trying very hard to claim leadership in Penang as it is the only BN-state in Peninsular Malaysia not under UMNO's leadership.
Meanwhile, Gerakan acting president Koh Tsu Koon today confirmed that he would be contesting in the Batu Kawan parliamentary seat. In the last general election, Koh contested in the Tanjung Bunga state seat. This time around he has decided to make a federal move following his elevation in the party hierarchy. He will be facing a challenge from DAP's P Ramasamy, a political rookie.
Finally, it is also interesting to see on how a blogger will be able to gain support from voters. Jeff Ooi, well-known blogger-turned-politian, who is standing as a DAP candidate in the elections is likely to be contesting in Jelutong.
