Tun Mahathir to testify at Nik Sapeia’s trial

KOTA BARU: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is scheduled to testify in the magistrate’s court here tomorrow in the trial of Datuk Nik Sapeia Nik Yusoff, who is facing a charge of intentionally causing hurt to the former prime minister.

Dr Mahathir has been subpoenaed as a prosecution witness. An aide confirmed that the former prime minister would attend court.

Nik Sapeia, 53, a former state Umno leader who has since joined PPP as its Kelantan chairman, is also charged with causing hurt to three others – former state Umno strongman Datuk Paduka Ibrahim Ali, businessmen Suberi Sahidan and Mohd Nasir Muda.

The tycoon is alleged to have discharged a spray containing a dangerous chemical at the four men last July 28 when Dr Mahathir arrived at the Sultan Ismail Petra Airport in Pengkalan Chepa.

The former premier been invited to attend events organised by two non-governmental organisations (NGOs) here.

State CID chief ACP Mazlan Lazim said police would step up security at all the venues where Dr Mahathir would be present.

“We have beefed up security and we advise people not to crowd unnecessarily. The people are also advised to be orderly if they want to greet Dr Mahathir.

“The traffic flow will be monitored when Dr Mahathir travels from the airport to the courthouse complex here,” he added.
