Court to hear Tun Mahathir's attacker suit against Government

The new buzz word for 2007 is "defamation". At the beginning, NSTP suing Bloggers for defamation, and now Tun Mahathir's attacker is suing the government. But, how come our beloved PM is not suing anyone for defamation since he is accusing bloggers using the Internet to spread lies about him? Strange but true.

KOTA BARU: The RM22mil civil suit filed by marine industry tycoon Datuk Nik Sapeia Nik Yusof against the Federal Government and two senior police officers here will be heard on April 3.

Nik Sapeia’s lawyer Zainal Abidin Mustaffa said the decision was made by Terengganu High Court Judge Datuk Ahmad Maarop when the matter came up for case management here yesterday.

Zainal said Justice Ahmad ordered both the plaintiff and respondents to prepare the necessary documents for submission in chambers.

Nik Sapeia, who is also facing one criminal count of causing hurt to former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad by allegedly discharging a dangerous spray chemical, filed a civil suit after he was freed by the police last Sept.

The trial for his criminal case has been fixed for March 11 to 15.

Nik Sapeia named investigating officer Asst Supt Baharin Mohd Noh, state police chief Senior Asst Comm (I) Datuk Zulkifli Abdullah and the Federal Government as the three defendants.

The three were represented by Federal Counsel Azizan Arshad yesterday.

Nik Sapeia alleged that he was defamed by malicious statements uttered by the police which were later reported in the media and that he was wrongfully detained even after his remand order had expired.

The former politician, who caused a stir in the court last December when he emerged from his specially-imported Cadillac limousine last December, came this time in a Mercedes-Benz R350 four-wheel-drive vehicle accompanied by his wife, Datin Dr Suraini Yahya.
