Khairy Jamaluddin wants Batu Talam independent candidate to lose deposit

RAUB, Jan 24 (Bernama) -- Umno Youth wants its campaign team to work harder to ensure that the independent candidate in the Batu Talam by-election on Sunday loses his deposit.

Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaludin said Wednesday that a big victory for the Barisan Nasional (BN) was important to show the people's solid support for the BN government.

While the Umno deputy president wanted the BN machinery to work hard to ensure a bigger majority for the coalition than in the 2004 general election, Umno Youth would work hard to ensure that the independent candidate lost his deposit, he told reporters.

Independent candidate Ng Chee Pang, 22, is crossing swords with the BN's Abdul Aziz Mat Kiram, 47, in the by-election which is being held following the death of Datuk Tengku Paris Tengku of the BN last Dec 27.

On preparations in the event of floods on polling day, Khairy said the Umno and BN Youth were making arrangements to ensure that the electorate could turn out to cast their votes.
