King Reminds MPs To Be Careful When Debating Sensitive Matters

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 9 (Bernama) -- Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Syed Putra Jamalullail reminded Parliamentarians to debate sensitive issues carefully and wisely and carry out their duties responsibly.

His Majesty said that they should be extra careful when debating sensitive matters so as not to jeopardise the unity that has been enjoyed all this while.

"I am confident that with sincere commitment on the part of the Yang Berhormats (MPs) in discharging the responsibility entrusted to them, parliamentary democracy as practised in Malaysia will continue to be held in high regard, not only in the country but thoughout the world," he said at his farewell dinner with the MPs here tonight.

His Majesty was accompanied by Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Fauziah Tengku Abdul Rashid. Also present were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin also reminded them to further improve their service to the people and stay away from activities that could be seen as abusing powers or breaking laws.

"The people of today are very good at evaluating their MPs and the decisions made by them. As such, it is important the good name and image of being an MP must be safeguarded," his Majesty said, adding that they should also keep abreast of the changes taking place in the world, particularly in this era of globalisation.

He also urged them to give their full support to the Prime Minister in bringing the nation to greater heights.

Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin will complete his term as the 12th Yang di-Pertuan Agong on Dec 12 and will be replaced by Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin of Terengganu.
