KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 1 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said Friday that the Barisan Nasional (BN) will face anyone who wants to contest in the next general election, including former deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The prime minister said Anwar would be no different from other opposition candidates who had contested against BN before.

"We will face anybody as we have faced anybody before who are against us," he told reporters after chairing the Umno supreme council meeting here.

Abdullah, who is also Umno president, was commenting on a recent statement by Anwar in an interview with Bloomberg that he would contest in the next general election.

On Anwar's prediction that the election would be held in 2008, Abdullah said only the government could decide the actual date.

"He can say anything he likes but we will decide what's the time going to be," said Abdullah.

Anwar, who was sentenced to jail in 1999 after the court found him guilty of corrupt practice, was released three years ago. Under the law, an ex-prisoner is eligible to participate in politics five years after being released.
