MARAN, Nov 18 (Bernama) -- The Umno Youth has not decided on the form of action to be meted out against the movement's executive council member Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir until he gives an explanation on his controversial remark on the policy speech by Umno president on Wednesday.
Its chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said he was still waiting if Mukhriz wants to give an explanation for his remark that the speech by Prime Minister and Umno President Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi at the opening of the Umno General Assembly offered nothing new and was disappointed as it was similar to the speech delivered last year.
"How I am going to take action as I've not heard the explanation from him yet. We will wait (for his explanation)," he told reporters after attending the Megaraya open house here Saturday.
Hishammuddin said he had given time to Mukhriz to explain what he had been harbouring deep in his heart.
"I'am also trying to give him some leeway because of his position as the son of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad but this issue touched on the Umno Youth's principle and stand.
"Hence, I cannot compromise," said the Education Minister.
Hishammuddin also described Mukhriz's matter as a "principle issue" which could jeopardise the spirit of comradeship and Umno Youth's struggles.
He hoped the issue could be resolved as soon as possible as he feared it would affect the movement's struggles.
"I consider this matter as a small issue but I'm leaving it to Mukhriz to handle it," he said.
Hishammuddin said the action to be taken against Mukhriz would hinge on his actions after this.
"If his intentions are good for Umno Youth and our spirit of comradeship in the movement is not affected, then he must do something quickly as the issue should not have happened.
"A leader must be responsible to what he is saying because people will assess the leader from what he does after this," he added.
