Tun Mahathir Transferred To Normal Ward, Not Allowed To Read Newspapers

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 10 (Bernama) -- Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who was warded at the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at the National Heart Institute (IJN) Thursday morning, was transferred to the normal ward Friday night.

His son Datuk Mukhriz said that from Friday, the family also disallowed him to read newspapers temporarily and advised him to read only books to ensure his health remained good.

Mukhriz, however, declined to elaborate why the action was taken and only said: "He is now relaxing, but we are not providing any newspapers, my apologies to you (media).

"Our focus now is to ensure Tun (Dr Mahathir) fully recovers," he told reporters at the IJN here Friday night and added that the family was pleased with the progress their father was making.

"We are very happy indeed and there are no signs of any negative effects from the medicine he is taking. However, we are unsure when he can be discharged," he said
.

Mukhriz said that Dr Mahathir also appeared to have regained his appetite and had porridge for dinner and at the time of the interview, was resting.

He did not deny that the punishing schedule his father had been keeping and lack of rest had been the cause for the mild heart attack that landed him at the IJN.

"He (Dr Mahathir) now is more aware that his health must take priority and should get more rest," he said.

He also said that the health of his mother Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamed Ali, who had constantly been by their father's side since he was admitted to the IJN, also needed to be monitored and that the children would ensure she got adequate rest.

Mukhriz said that he received 800 SMSes (messages on the short-messaging -system) and many calls Friday from wellwishers praying for Dr Mahathir's quick recovery.

"I wish to apologise for being unable to thank each and everyone for their kind gesture. Please accept this thank you from me," he said.

On the Umno General Assembly which begins on Monday, Mukhriz said that he would be attending it as a non-speaking delegate and would not be involved in any of the debates.

He is a committee member of the Kubang Pasu Umno division in Kedah and also an exco member of Umno Youth.
