Tun Mahathir as "Guru" to PM

JITRA, Oct 31 (Bernama) -- The Kubang Pasu Umno division reaffirmed its support to the party leadership in the face of criticisms of the government by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, hoping that the former prime minister will change his stand and be more diplomatic in his offensive.

Division deputy head Ahmad Zaini Japar said the division's stand on the issue was similar to that taken by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, who is also Kedah Umno liaison chief.

Although there were differences on the ways to resolve the issue, the decision still points to the same objective, he told reporters at a Hari Raya open house hosted by the division secretary Shamsuddin Ahmad in his residence at Felda Batu 8, near here, Tuesday.

On Sunday, Mahdzir asked Dr Mahathir to relinquish his post as adviser of government agencies if he intends to continue criticising the government.

Ahmad Zaini, who was Kubang Pasu Umno Youth chief when Dr Mahathir headed the division, said the division was trying to persuade Dr Mahathir and would meet him when he is in Langkawi next week.

"We believe Tun can be pacified and can accept our views," said Ahmad Zaini without revealing who would meet and persuade Dr Mahathir.

"If Dr Mahathir chooses to criticise after that, let him as a "guru" (master) to pass down his knowledge but he should do it in a more diplomatic manner," he said.

Ahmad Zaini hoped Dr Mahathir would think of Umno's interests than the leaders because leaders come and go but the party would remain.
