Tun Mahathir Admitted To IJN For Mild Heart Attack

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 9 (Bernama) -- Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) here Thursday for mild myocardial infarct (mild heart attack).

Dr Mahathir, who will be 81 next month, had complained of mild chest pains in the early hours today and was then admitted to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) for observation, IJN said in a statement here.

His condition is stable and he is expected to be kept under observation for one week.

Dr Mahathir had a coronary artery bypass surgery in 1989.

According to IJN, the former prime minister had been having his regular medical check-ups at the institute, where he was last admitted in December last year.

Dr Mahathir has been advised to rest and will only receive visits from immediate family members.

"IJN will periodically issue statements to update on Tun's condition as and when there is a need," it said.

Meanwhile, an aide to the former prime minister said Dr Mahathir had complained of chest pains at his house between 3am and 4am today.
