Cabinet Agrees Live Telecast Of Umno Assembly Had More Negative Impact

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 22 (Bernama) - The Cabinet Wednesday agreed that the live telecast of the Umno General Assembly on a cable TV station had more of a negative impact than positive, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said.

"It gave a distorted picture of the proceedings...," he told reporters here Wednesday.

Najib, who is also Umno Deputy President, said the Umno Supreme Council would make the final decision on whether or not to allow future party gatherings to be telecast live on television.

On the just-concluded Umno general assembly, Najib said perhaps there were speakers who played to the gallery when they delivered their speeches, which unfortunately were regarded as extreme by some quarters.

He also said that Umno had explained the matter to the other BN component parties.

"They understood (the situation). The important thing was that the Prime Minister's winding up speech reflected our official stance and policy.

"There is no change in our commitment towards the BN and in working together with other communities within the BN structure.

"We remain steadfast in our commitment and appreciate the contribution of every community to the development of the nation," he said
