Abdullah was later ushered to the first floor, but reporters and photographers were not allowed to cover his visit.
The premier left the IJN about 2.30pm without speaking to reporters who were waiting at the lobby to get the latest development on Dr Mahathir.
The former premier was admitted for mild myocardial infarction (mild heart attack), according to a IJN statement.
Dr Mahathir who turns 81 next month, complained of mild chest pains in the early hours today and was then admitted to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) for observation, the IJN said.
"His condition is stable and he is expected to be kept under observation for one week," it said.

He had been having his regular medical check-ups at the institute, where he was last admitted in December last year.
Dr Mahathir has been advised to rest and will only receive visits from immediate family members.
In 1999, Dr Mahathir was also admitted to IJN to rest and undergo full treatment for a lung infection which he suffered after returning from performing the Haj.
