Kubang Pasu: Dr M did not top nominations

Umno Kubang Pasu today clarified that former party president Dr Mahathir Mohamad did not top the nominations to contest to be a delegate from the division for the Umno general assembly this November.

In fact, Mahathir had only secured 15 nominations from the 143 branches in the division, placing him second from last among the 17 candidates.

However, Mahathir’s son Mukhriz garnered 50 nominations, making him the second highest after division secretary Samsudin Ahmad who received 97 nominations.

Previously, malaysiakini reported that Mahathir was leading the pack with 79 nominations.

Commenting on this, Samsudin said initially the former premier was expected to receive a high number of nominations from the branches in the division, which he had headed prior to his retirement in 2003.

Contacted today, he said based on the findings of those monitoring the nominations, who attended all the branch meetings, 79 of them were expected to nominate Mahathir after expressing support for him.

However, he added that this was not the official results.
