Najib: No trade-off between bridge and sovereignty

We go the message already. No Bridge, No sovereignty trading.

Excerpt from NST
MUAR: Malaysia will not trade its sovereignty for a bridge across the Johor Strait to replace the Causeway, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said yesterday.

He said the Cabinet had decided not to go ahead with the construction of the bridge in exchange for allowing Singapore to use Malaysian air- space for its air force and to buy sand from the country for its reclamation projects.

He said if the airspace was allowed to be used by Singapore, Johor residents would feel uneasy each time they looked at the sky and saw the Singapore planes.

Furthermore, Najib said, with the sand, the island would be undergoing continuous expansion.

He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had given a firm reply that the bridge would not be built.

Najib, who came in a trishaw to open the delegates’ conference of the Muar Umno division here yesterday, was confident the South Johor Corridor would succeed like Putrajaya in a few years, bringing benefits to Johor and the country.

He reminded Umno members to look ahead in view of the progress made by two new economic superpowers — China and India.
