KOTA BELUD, Aug 9 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi last Monday replied to all speculation and allegations by various quarters directed at his leadership and family members, Umno Youth Deputy Chief Khairy Jamaluddin said Wednesday.
"I believe the explanation given by Abdullah was clear and can be accepted by the people of Malaysia who desire to look ahead," he told reporters after opening the delegates' meetings of the Kota Belud and Kota Marudu Umno Youth, here.
He said he hoped that following the explanation, the government led by Abdullah could be able to focus its attention and efforts on more important matters such as the implementation of the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP) and the preparation of the Barisan Nasional (BN) for the next general election.
Khairy said the decision by Abdullah, who is also Umno president, to provide a conclusive explanation was timely because the speculation and allegations seemed to have reached a stage where they had become irrational and illogical.
He also said that the members of Umno Youth he met wherever he went said they were satisfied with the explanation provided by the government, either that given by Abdullah or the other leaders.
"They are more comfortable if the focus of the government and people is more on the implementation of the Ninth Malaysia Plan and not on the same questions that have been repeated over and over again," he said.
Khairy said that if there were people who still could not accept the explanation given by the prime minister, it would only mean that there are "differences of opinion" between them and the government, and it is not because the government did not give the answers.
"If answers are sought and answers are given, I feel there is no necessity for the government or leaders to repeat the answers over and over again. I feel that the people accept the answers given once and if there are people who still do not accept them, then we have to assume that there are differences of opinion," he said.
"It is not that we have anything to hide but when one is forced to give answers all the while ... we have to say that enough is enough. What more is there for us to say. Otherwise, it will turn out to be an exercise in futility." he added.
On the allegations against him, Khairy said initially he felt that it was unnecessary to reply to them but in the end he was forced to come out with an explanation because the matter had reached a stage where keeping silent would have led some people to assume that there was truth in the allegations.
Therefore, Khairy said, he had personally taken the opportunity of the divisional delegates meetings to go down to the divisions to provide explanation to the Umno Youth members.
He also expressed his thanks to the Umno Youth members at the grassroots who stood by him and wanted him to retain his position as the number two in the movement.
He said that so long as the Umno Youth members felt that he could carry out the duties entrusted to him well and assist Umno Youth Chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein well, he would continue to play his role in the movement.
Khairy said he was not pressured into travelling nationwide to answer the allegations against him but did so because he felt that in politics explanation must be given to the grassroots to avert a situation where they get confused and adopt a perception that was far from the actual.
At the function, Sabah Umno Youth Chief and Kota Belud Division Umno Youth Chief Japlin Akim expressed the undivided support of the state Umno Youth for Khairy to remain in the Umno Youth leadership.
"The partnership of Hishammuddin and Khairy in Umno Youth has made Umno Youth renowned internationally through the aid extended to victims of the tsunami in Aceh and the earthquake in Pakistan," he said.
